The purpose of periodic inspection and testing
Periodic inspection and testing is a legal requirement concerned primarily with the safety of persons and livestock against the effects of electric shock and burns, protection against fire and heat, arising from installation defects. Conformation that the installation is not damaged or deteriorated so as to impair safety and the identification of defects and regulation non-compliance which may give rise to danger.
Your legal obligations as an employer
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires that all electrical systems shall be maintained so as to be kept in a safe condition. The frequency and nature of the maintenance must be such to prevent danger so far as is reasonably practical. Regular inspection of equipment including the electrical installation is an essential part of any preventive maintenance programme.The Health & Safety Executive recommend that to comply with the regulations, an inspection and testing regime should be implemented at all places of work.These works are carried out in accordance with chapter 73 of BS7671 Wiring Regulations, and the Guidance Notes as issued by the I.E.E.
