Each year around 30 fatalities and 1000 accidents at work involving electric shock and burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive. Many of these deaths and injuries arise from the use of poorly maintained, and unsuitable electrical equipment.
Additionally, legislation clearly sets out the need to keep electrical systems in good order. Regulation 4(2) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires that:
As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.
This requires that the system be kept in a safe condition, The frequency and nature of the maintenance must be such as to prevent danger so far as is reasonably practicable. Regular inspection of equipment including the electrical installation is an essential part of any preventive maintenance programme.
At flexitest we believe that the implementation of a comprehensive, written, health and safety policy, which addresses amongst other hazards, the potential risk of electric shock and burns to be an important part of workplace safety regardless of company type or size.
